Three Epiphanies
cello (1987) 12', three movements
published by Sweet Child Music
recorded by Mathias Wexler, Five New Works for Cello, Albany/Troy 1092
recorded by Lawrence Stomberg, The American Cello, private issue
The epiphanic nature of these pieces arises from both technical and circumstantial motivations. As a means of freeing my compositional approach, I set out with the constraint of completing each movement in one week's time, thereby letting the music develop on its own course rather than fashioning a tightly-knit work as was then (in 1987) more typical of my compositional style. The music thus continually transforms itself, its linear development at times interrupted by epiphanic bursts of inspiration. As an extended solo work of wide-ranging style, the piece presents interpretive as well as technical challenges to the performer. |
