Léger's Dream (Scènes de Ballet)
clarinet, violin, cello, guitar, percussion (2007) 15', two movements

published by Sweet Child Music

  • commissioned by Norte Maar
  • choreographed by Julia Gleich

The two movements of Léger's Dream were commissioned as the beginning and ending scenes of a ballet, with music by other composers used for the inner scenes. The scenario loosely extrapolates from the summers that the painter Léger spent in Rouses Point NY, and uses stylistic elements from Léger's work in the design of the ballet. The opening movement, A La Gare (At the Station), sets up the dream sequence in a lyrical and atmospheric manner. The finale, La Grande Parade, is more animated and evokes French neoclassical style, before the Epilogue - Adieu New York brings back the opening atmospheric material.
